PHEW. So, the reason I went a little MIA there is because I started having some major anxiety issues again. I was having some panic attacks and I really had to just take things easy until my doctor could see me. Fortunately he was able to fit me in, and we did a little tinkering with my dosage. So far so good. I think maybe it was triggered by my recent interest in exercising so much. Supposedly that can trigger panic attacks in people who have anxiety. To me that's a little ironic since I've always heard that excercise is sooo beneficial to your mental health. Not for me, haha! Now that my dosage has been upped I'm slowly starting to incorporate exercise back in.

So these photos are actually from a couple weeks ago, before all that unpleasantness. It's already too hot for long sleeves here, if you can believe it. But at the time, this breezy blouse was just the right amount of coverage and lightweight fabric for that bizarre in between weather. Also, I love that little cutout on the back, but I could NOT get that little flap of fabric on the inside to quit sticking up. I guess I'll put a little stitch in there to hold it down.

I know there's some rule about what part of the year you're "supposed" to wear white pants, but honestly I don't even know what it is. I am so disinterested in any kind of fashion "rules," it's ridiculous! I do what I want. ;)

Haha! No, really. We are volunteering to help out with a youth retreat for church this weekend. I'm a little excited and a little nervous. Mostly nervous because of my fun friend Mr. Anxiety, but so far I'm making it through. I was never involved with a youth group when I was a kid, so part of me is looking forward to sharing that experience. Even if it's as a lame adult! ;)

You may have noticed that I made a few minor improvements to the blog layout. I thought it was time to update things just a little bit. Overall I'm still happy with the clean, basic design. But my header image still had me rocking super long red locks, which hasn't been the case for over a year now! I hope you like the fresh touches.

This June is my grandma's 90th birthday. Can you believe it? She's a huge part of my life. She moved in with my parents about four years ago. But even when I was small I spent a few nights a week at her house. She is hilarious and plainspoken, sometimes painfully so, haha! Anyway, for her birthday we are driving up to my aunt's house in Maine to have a big party. Then from Maine we will be headed out west again for the second summer in a row!

I don't know if you can tell from these photos, but this navy blue dress has an awesome quilted texture. It's a sturdy ponte knit and I'm so in love with it. I think wearing it over this chambray button down gives it a spunky little kick. These shoes were an amazing score from Gabe's, for $7. You can't really beat that!

I'm trying to grow out my pixie cut, and it is officially driving me CRAZY. And it's only been three months! I'm not sure I'm going to make it, haha! I'm heading out west again this Summer (yay!) and I'm dreading dealing with awkward hair in the blazing Nevada heat. But I've told myself I will trek on, at least until right before my trip, and see how far I can get. I don't want it to be super long again-- I'm thinking bob length.

I found this sweater at a thrift store ages ago, and I've been waiting for the perfect temperature to wear it. It's pretty warm, but not warm enough for crazy freezing temps. Luckily the perfect day presented itself, and voila! Textured grandpa sweater was victorious.

I paired it with these pale pink skinnies that have a metallic gold fleck on them, but that really didn't come across in any of these photos. Shucks! You'll just have to take my word for it. I'm pretty pale so I'm always a little hesitant to reach for such a pastel color. But I think it works here, paired with the saturated green knit.

Hey there! Welcome to Nerd It Up! This is a feature on the blog where I put together plus-size looks inspired by nerd culture. This week the inspiration comes from the comic book hero, Captain Marvel! She is currently my faaaavorite comic book character. If you're not familiar with Carol Danvers here, she's slated to get the first female-led Marvel movie title in 2018. She's basically a fiery, fist-first, smart-mouthed, sassy, completely awesome chick. Her powers include super strength, flight, and "the ability to shoot concussive energy bursts from her hands," according to Marvel's website. But even cooler than that is before she had any superpowers, Carol Danvers was already a Colonel in the Air Force and trained in hand-to-hand combat. My favorite quality of hers is her sassiness. She says what she thinks and she doesn't put up with garbage. I'm so excited for her movie to come out already!

Anyway, here are a few looks that I've put together that were inspired by Earth's Mightiest Hero, Captain Marvel!

In fact, I actually kind of enjoy them. It's the day when my spirit of "roll up them sleeves and get junk done" is at its strongest. I feel refreshed from the weekend, and just ready to go. It's great too, because I have been working on couch to 5k. (If you've never heard of this, it's basically a fitness program that helps beginners gradually learn to run.) It's so fun! I have to take it at a much slower pace-- I usually spend 3-4 weeks on one "week" of the program-- but it's been really challenging and fun to get my muscles going. I do my walking/jogging combo on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with a total rest day on Sunday. So by Monday I'm ready to get cracking on that, too!

In between couch to 5k training I've been doing some light at-home workouts and some beginner's yoga. I am NOT flexible so it's been pretty funny, haha. But it's getting better! I used to be very athletic as a younger teen and I had kind of forgotten how great it feels to rediscover the strength of your body. It might sound corny, but I just feel so powerful!

I never, ever thought I would be the kind of person that was "into" fitness, but I have to say that I've been enjoying it so much it's occupying my thoughts a lot more as of late. I've been pinning up a little storm!

I know I've been wearing this triangle print jacket a lot lately (sick of it yet?), but it's just so cute! I feel like it instantly peps up my outfit. For this look I decided to top it off with a vintage fur collar I found at a local thrift shop. I've never owned anything fur before-- it feels so opulent. Hence the photo where I'm doing my "Cruella de Vil/rich lady" laugh.

Anyway, I hope your week is off to a great start! Have any of you ever tried couch to 5k before? Or do you have other fitness expertise? I'd love to hear from you in the comments!

It's pretty much March now, I know. But I can't let 2014 go flying by without taking the time to comment on what a MOMENTOUS year it was for me and my little family. So I'm going to share a few photos from 2014, and just point out a few changes that took place last year for us.

Probably the biggest event of 2014 was when I quit my traditional desk job and started my online shop. HOLY COW. This was a scary, scary decision, and even though things have been tough lately I have to say I think it's the best choice I've ever made. Working for myself has been so freeing, and at the same time, soooo hard. You have to really be your own motivator when you're self-employed, and there's no safety net if something comes up. If you make a mistake, you're the only one to blame! But you also call the shots, have full creative freedom, and set your own schedule. To me, that's really worth it.

I also took a cross-country road trip last year! I had never visited the Western United States before and this trip was really, really amazing. It's hard to believe that this country could be SO different from one coast to the other. The landscape is totally different, even the air, the plants, the animals. Plus I spent a ton of time with my mom and 89-year-old grandma, as they were my tripmates! We definitely became closer, which is wonderful in of itself.

We adopted our second kitty, Aengus! This is kind of related to our road trip, since I actually got him from my second cousin in Missouri (whom I had never met before!). He's been an amazing addition to our family, albeit a rather feisty one. He's a lot of work! But we love him, and it's hard to imagine our lives without him now.

We moved from our previous rental home into a townhouse, which has actually been an amazing blessing in disguise. At the time we were very upset when we found out we would have to move. We loved our house, especially our nice spacious yard and screened-in porch! But our current home is definitely a better fit for us. It's smaller, which makes it easier to maintain, and we went through an intensive de-cluttering stage right when we moved, so we really only have things we need or love!

There were some sad events in 2014 as well, of course, but I think it's important to remember what things we have in our lives to be thankful for. My husband and I are very fortunate. We might not have a lot of money, but we really want for nothing essential to life. We celebrated our first wedding anniversary in 2014, and life just has a pleasant glow of hope to it. Here's to another great year!

Like I promised earlier, in an effort to be more transparent and open, I'm just going to tell you the truth. Things have been STRESSFUL. My husband's hours at work have been temporarily slashed, and since we live paycheck to paycheck, I have spent the last few months scrambling to rake in as much supplemental income as possible. Basically, it's felt like standing on the precipice of a cliff from morning 'til night. We're definitely not out of the woods now, but all I can do is have faith that God will carry us through this too.

I've started a few part-time work at home jobs to get a little more money coming in, but my first priority is still my SHOP! You may have noticed it's solely eBay based now. I found that's where I was doing the best, so I moved everything over there. Please check regularly, I'm constantly adding new things! As always I try to keep prices very reasonable and have a selection of larger plus sizes available whenever possible.

Pretty soon I'm also going to start selling some hand embroidered items via Etsy! Nothing has been stocked yet, but here is a link to my shop there if you want to keep checking back! If you follow me on tumblr or twitter, you'll have seen a few images of stuff that I'm working on. I definitely want to put some fat positive pieces in there, so if you're into it, keep your eyes peeled!

We're very blessed to live so close to such beautiful scenery, which is only prettier this time of year with the golden light and the colorful leaves. Plus it's always nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of this city for a while and just take a breath.

I've been thinking a lot today about false compliments. If you're a fat girl, there's pretty much a 99% chance you know what I'm talking about here. You've heard the "you have such a pretty face" and "no, you're not fat, you're beautiful" and (my personal favorite) "there's just more of you to love!" In my opinion, the basic rule here is that true compliments do not have a conditional clause. No one looks at a gorgeous mountain view and says "sure is pretty for a rock." Of course not!

You look at a gorgeous mountain view and call it what it is-- beautiful. Compliments should work the same way. When you tell someone she's "not fat, she's beautiful" you are making the statement that those two things are mutually exclusive. That she cannot possibly be both fat and beautiful, because fat is in its very nature repulsive and lazy and whatever other negative connotations we're taught.

That's simply not the case. I am fat and beautiful, just like I'm also funny, happy, and smart. Stop telling people they have such "a pretty face"-- as if the rest of them isn't stunning too! If you can't give a sincere compliment that is one hundred percent genuine, then just keep your mouth shut. YES, that sounds mean, and YES, I mean it!

More than that you should understand that people do not exist just to give you something nice to look at. So what if I'm fat and beautiful. So what if I was ugly. There is more purpose to my life than aiming to be visually pleasing. Nobody owes you the courtesy of being decent to look at.

The next time someone offers you a false compliment, you should explain to them why you don't appreciate it. If you're feeling rather benevolent you can even be nice about it. Maybe just a "actually, I'm fat AND pretty" or a "I'm not here to decorate your visual landscape" will do. How do you guys handle insincere compliments?

The theme this month is "Leader of the Pack," which I had a little trouble coming up with something for. Eventually I went with this look, which I think is kind of like 80s girl meets the Artful Dodger (yay Dickens!). I don't know how true to the theme that is, but hey! That's where my brain went.

I love that there is now a group for alternative style plus-size chicks. I don't consider myself to be exactly tough or hard or edgy, but I definitely think my style isn't exactly mainsteam. I gravitate toward things that are funky and fun, and I think that qualifies!

I also have to tell you guys that I'm having a hard time writing this because my kitten, Aengus, wants to play fetch and he doesn't care that I'm writing. He has this little stuffed goldfish that he carries up onto the couch, drops next to me, and squeaks and meow-barks until I throw it. Which of course means he's gone exactly seven seconds before he comes trotting back with the thing, ready to go again. So I guess I'm not much of a pack leader, because I can't even handle my cats, haha!

I am seriously addicted to sweater dresses. We went to Ross the other day and the racks were full of them. Full! If I were a richer woman I would have come home with all of them. Instead I settled for this one and one other (I'm sure you'll be seeing that one, too!). It's finally cooling off around these parts, so I was pretty ecstatic that I could finally wear this without breaking a sweat. I'm definitely more of a warm weather person, but there is just something so magical about this time of the year. The smells, the brisk air, the pumpkin flavored everything. I've been opening the windows of our place to let in the fresh air, and burning candles just about every second of the day. It's the best.

In other news, I think I'm going to take a stab at NaNoWriMo this year. If you're not familiar with it, it's basically a month-long challenge where you try to write a novel! (You can check out the website HERE for more info.) You have to stay on top of your daily word count to make the goal. I don't have any ideas for what I'd write about, but I think there's beauty in that.

I don't really have any other plans for the coming month except for that. I prefer to take hurdles as they appear! And, you know, dinner plans as they fall together last minute. I know some people love scheduling their time but that's just not me. I like things to be relaxed and spur of the moment.

How about you, my lovely readers? Are you enjoying this season, or looking forward to something altogether different? Halloween plans? I'm excited that we might actually have trick-or-treaters this year at the new place! There's kids playing outside all the time in this neighborhood so I'm hoping that will mean we can give out candy.

I'm really getting into the swing of things with my boutique, and it's definitely demanding on my time. Part of the difficulty is figuring out what works and what just doesn't. But that's part of the fun, too! I'm learning and growing and moving forward, and it's really an exciting time in my life.

On October 6th, I turned 27! As a kid I never even thought about what my life would be like by that age, but I have to say that it's better than anything I ever dreamed about. I love that we're in a place where I can now work from home and be my own boss. I feel more confident and beautiful than I ever did as a younger woman. I see my 30s on the horizon, and I can honestly say that I'm just feeling positive and hopeful that this will be the happiest season of my life so far.

As you can see, my hair is DARK! I love it so much... it was a birthday gift to myself on the 6th, haha. My amazing hairstylist Jodi mixed a custom color for me. It's dark chocolately brown with violet mixed in there. When I'm in more natural light the purple really shines. I think I'm going to keep this color a lot longer than the last. I'm really enjoying playing with different color palettes now that I'm not a redhead.

Oh, and I almost forgot! I got new glasses, too! I love them, they're giant. I have a little cartoon cat version of myself that I've drawn since my early teens, and she wears glasses just like these. So I had full on nerd out when I got them in the mail.

And Reuniting with CoralHello, loves! So yesterday I bid adieu to my awesome coral hair. Parting is such sweet sorrow, but I really missed wearing all the pinks and corals I have in my closet. I just thought it was a little bit overkill to have pink hair and a matching ensemble, haha. It was totally fun while it lasted, though! Even all the weird looks I got shot while running around town.

I actually tried to dye it a dark chocolate brown... and ended up with GREEN. And not a cool, intentional green, either. It was like the olive green color of army fatigues. Yikes!! I did it myself with kool aid. I know. I never got past 15-years-old.

But I actually fixed it with kool aid too, so there's that! After a little googling I realized that it happened because the top part of my hair was so yellow. So I added a little pinkish red over the top and voila! Back to my natural color.

So! It's not the dark brown I wanted, but at least it's nice looking. I'll probably give dark brown another try once my poor little scalp has had some R&R.

I run my online boutique, and also sell things on eBay and Etsy! While this is super fun and gives me a ton of flexibility, I have to admit that I don't exactly get dressed to the nines every day. Most days I don't even wear shoes! So I wanted to share this outfit just to give a little glimpse into my daily life.

There's really not much more comfortable than a breezy maxi dress. Plus, it's cute! I like the mustard ikat print on this one.

I still shower and get dressed even though I do a lot of work from my couch. I just can't wake up and feel productive without a shower and a fresh change of clothes.

I love warm weather, but enough is enough! After driving to the post office for the third time this week with no a/c in my car, I am totally over this hot weather. This outfit was certainly wishful thinking on my part. I'm so ready for long sleeves, boots, and hot chocolate. But even this lightweight blouse was a little much for 80 degrees fahrenheit.

I'm not sorry though, because I'm in love with this top! It's such a gorgeous chartreuse color. Which is probably a little over the top considering I have coral hair. But HEY! Go big or go home.

I'm staying super busy lately. My hubby has been having some minor medical issues, so I've been scrambling around trying to take care of everything at home. Hopefully he'll be better soon.

Mental health wise, things have been really good! When you have anxiety, you can go for quite a while without an incident. I still get nervous in certain situations because I've learned to associate them with panic symptoms. But all in all I'd say things are going excellently right now.

I'm so excited that things are starting to take off for my little shop. It took a lot of nerve for me to quit my job and start this new chapter of my life. The last few months have been a whirlwind of anxiety and nervousness and hopefulness. It's finally starting to look like this may actually work, and I feel the need to pinch myself just about every five minutes.

Being able to work from home and pretty much set my own schedule has taken so much weight off my shoulders. My anxiety level has been markedly less as a direct result. I just feel so eternally thankful for everyone who has supported my shop for making this life change possible for me and my husband. Please keep checking back as I plan on adding more and more things all the time.

Today was my new kitty's last visit to the vet for a whole year. I'm STOKED! It's been a long couple months with him. When he first came to live with us he had a really gnarly upper respiratory infection, along with a whole host of parasites. We couldn't get him vaccinated and fixed until we cleared up his other issues, and it took almost a month just to get his sniffling and cough to go away. But now he's healthy and happy (and neutered)! He's my little 5-pound lovebug, haha.

I was so insecure and so not into the way that I looked, I just hated seeing pictures of myself. Folks, that is so wrong and messed up! Taking pictures of yourself is one of the most positive (and in my experience, most successful) ways of learning to love yourself and your body. Study your shape, your face, your everything. Memorize every freckle and line and curve, and eventually (I promise!) you will start to see the beauty in it all.

I think the emergence of the "selfie" is one of the most beneficial things out there for anyone with body image issues. For one thing, sharing a bunch of selfies is empowering to other people just like you! Who doesn't want to see pictures of some cute person, doing their thing, feeling confident and beautiful? NO ONE. Confidence, like happiness, is contagious. The more positive images of real, everyday people you can surround yourself with, the most you will start to feel like that could be you.

The reason I seriously love this shirt is, obviously, (hellooooo) because I'm a big promoter of its message. 1.) LOVE YOURSELF. and 2.) TAKING SELFIES IS A GREAT WAY TO DO THAT. I had to have it as soon I saw it hanging on the rack. Cute cold shoulders were a plus, too!

Be rebellious-- don't listen to the messages inherent in media and our culture that tell you you aren't good enough or pretty enough. Because you are! I PROMISE!

I'm so passionate about people feeling good in their own skin. Please, if you haven't already tried it, take some selfies! You don't even have to share them with the world if you're not ready yet. This exercise is just for you. Stretch those self-love muscles and eventually you will be a body positive champion. And take it from me, that's a good thing to be.

I've read soooo many articles about how to be a better blogger, online shop owner, etc. etc., and one common thread throughout is that people respond to people and not perfection. That's something that I really have a tough time with. Don't we all? The whole purpose of being body positive is trying to work through my own insecurities and learn to love myself just the way I am. But it's harder for me to do that on an emotional level, and not just about the way I look.

My sophomore year of college I was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder. It all culminated one night in a really horrible panic attack that left me holed up in my dorm room for a week. I was scared and just physically exhausted and sick. I had a very unsympathetic roommate who made things even harder for me. She was a Psych major and felt qualified to tell me that things were just in my head and that I shouldn't take any medication because I could just "deal with it." But really, that's not what I'm getting at here! One by one my friends started falling to the wayside.

I get it. I mean, I really do. My disorder is a lot to ask anyone to deal with. I cancel a lot of plans last minute. Sometimes I can't deal with large crowds. I'm always afraid something will trigger a panic attack. And sometimes I feel bad just because, and I can't explain why. That's a lot to ask anyone to understand, especially people who are about 19 and 20 years old. By the time my graduation rolled around in 2010 I had zero school friends left, except for my then-boyfriend (now husband).

Even though I know on a higher level that it's messed up, what I took away from this experience is that I shouldn't always share too much of myself. If I'm too needy, or always down and sad, people just don't want to spend time with me. So since then I have prevented myself from forming close friendships because deep down I feel that as soon as I begin to invest emotionally in someone, they will realize what a burden my friendship is and leave.

This affects my blogging, even! When I have a bad day I just "edit" it out, so to speak. I don't mention it. I include very little text. And I think that needs to stop. If you're here reading this, I need to trust that something about me is interesting and valuable to you and that's that.

(And my car doesn't have air conditioning-- yikes!) So I'm still dressing for comfort and coolness around here. I wore this to go thrifting and do some cleaning around the house. I stayed nice and cool with this super cute vintage tank top. And hello! Still loving my coral hair. I touched it up with kool aid, no lie.

I love living in the South, but MAN is it hot sometimes. Anyway, this is my attempt at bringing this awesome vintage top into the present. I'm not 100% in love with this look, but hey! They've become a closet staple for me. I wore them over the weekend to do a few errands and work on my boutique. Man, is it hot here or what! I'm a little jealous of people who are already beginning to talk about Fall weather. Not here in SC! At least not yet, haha.

I come bearing TONS of news this post! All of it good (GREAT) stuff, too.

First of all, you may have noticed a new-- and super obvious-- button on the sidebar labeled "SHOP." That's because my boutique is finally up and running! (You can find it HERE.) I am sooo excited to move forward with this little adventure. And this is only a taste of what I have in store for you guys. I've been snatching up a huge selection of fashionable plus size items, both modern and vintage. I'm also trying to extend the size range as far as I possibly can! I know fashionable items in larger plus sizes are hard to come by, so I'm making a concerted effort to have those available as much as possible. So make sure you keep checking back for more items all the time!

Secondly, I dyed my hair! To mark this new chapter of my life in which I get to be more bold and creative, I decided to get some hair that went with. So I now have a pale coral ombre pixie. I'm so totally in love with it! There's a Coco Chanel quote I spotted floating around Pinterest that says "A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life." I couldn't agree with that statement more-- to me this new look is like the christening of this new chapter of my life. I'm so glad I get to share that with you guys!

Anyway, enough of my blabbering and on with the outfit! This look isn't too over the top. I'm testing the waters with what color combinations work with my new pinkened locks. What do you think?

I wore this dress to church on Sunday, and then for lunch with my in-laws. It's made from this awesome springy material that makes the skirt feel full and twirly. I love it! I can see this dress transitioning easily into Fall. Maybe by just adding some tights and a blazer? I guess we'll see!

I've shown just about all of these items on the blog before, but for some reason I've never put them all together like this. But I'm glad I did, because I love how it turned out. I feel like this look is the perfect balance between casual and put-together.

Plus, hello! New booties! I have been looking for some of these EVERYWHERE, but I had a hard time finding some that would fit around my wide ankles. I finally scored these a few days ago at Ross. The pleather is really soft and forgiving, so they work for me.

I'm rockin' some tall hair today, haha! I'm still in love with having short hair. I have so much fun styling it, and I love that it doesn't take nearly as long to try something new.

Just a simple little outfit today. It's hot down here in the South! On top of that my car has no a/c. So on days when I have to go somewhere, I have to dress cool so I don't die.
