Nerd It Up: Vikings

Hello lovelies! Welcome to Nerd It Up! This is a feature on the blog where I put together plus-size looks inspired by nerd culture. This week the inspiration comes from the tv show, Vikings. This show totally caught me by surprise. I decided to watch it on a whim, and I was instantly hooked! Mainly by one of the main characters named Lagertha. She's one part nurturing mother, one part sword-toting shieldmaiden, and 100% complete badass. I just can't get enough! I seriously tune into the show week after week just to see what she's getting up to. Which isn't to say the rest of the cast isn't also great (they are), but in my opinion Lagertha really steals the spotlight. You should definitely check it out if you haven't already been sucked in! They've just wrapped up the second season so now is the perfect time to catch up.

I'm home now but we still have tons of unpacking to do! Once everything gets settled here I'll definitely be posting some new outfits, as well as adding my new boutique. Stay tuned!

Style Icon: Ginnifer Goodwin

I'm so excited to share this post with you guys today. I've had this on my mind for a while now, and I finally put it all together. Let me know what you guys think! If you like seeing posts like this, I might make this a feature on the blog.

I wanted to talk about my favorite source of style inspiration-- my style icon-- Ginnifer Goodwin! I just love her so much. She's so chic and I love her very classic, but still youthful look. Of course one of my favorite aspects of Ginnifer's look is her perfectly enviable pixie. I won't even lie, 95% of the time I take photos of her crop to my hairstylist to immitate on my own hair. My hair is much wavier and coarser, so it's not an exact match. But wow! I would love it if it was. ;)

One fashion staple Ginnifer often rocks is a collared top or dress. Buttoning that top button looks super polished when combined with a sleek pixie. I dig it! Add some effortless sunnies and you're done. In my opinion it helps to use a piece that's patterned or in a punchy color, to add a little more interest to such an otherwise basic silhouette. The key to pulling this look off is subtle but interesting details. I've put together a little shopping inspo to go with this particular style:

I also really, really love how Ginnifer's classic, crisp taste translates to her red carpet looks. For example here, her shimmery gown is pulled together by some bold graphic lines that give it a more solid structure. She also really knows how to play up the elegant proportions of her short hairdo by adding delicate, long earrings. A neutral color palette really helps the structure of the garment make a statement. Paired with a bold eye or eyebrow this looks is mega suave!

Lastly, here are a few looks Ginnifer has worn that I haven't yet recreated. But I'm dying to! As most of you know it's not exactly easy to always find plus size translations of straight size outfits. I did my best to capture these for you, though!

Nerd It Up: Amazing Spider-Man 2

Hello lovelies! Welcome to Nerd It Up! This is a feature on the blog where I put together plus-size looks inspired by nerd culture. This week the inspiration comes from the movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Spidey is definitely my all-time favorite super hero (with Spider Woman pulling a close second), and the latest reboot is, in my opinion, a vast improvement from the last attempt! The Spidey we see in these flicks is so much more like the one I've always loved from comics and cartoons. Flippant, goofy, sarcastic, and loveably vulnerable despite his superpowers. You should definitely check it out if you haven't already!

After doing my post for ModCloth's new dress, it occurred to me that it might be easier to start using Polyvore to put together my NIU posts as well. So I'm trying it out this time! What do you think? Does this format work for you, or did you prefer the old way?

ModCloth & Goodbye Hollywood

Hey there, lovelies! I was recently contacted by ModCloth and asked to put together a look centered around their new Vivacious and Vibrant Dress in Noir. I jumped at the challenge because 1.) hello, ModCloth and 2.) I love putting together fantasy outfits. (Don't we all?)

This outfit was inspired by a weekend spent watching movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. I've always loved that perfect balance between playfulness and class. This outfit definitely leans toward the playful side a bit more than the serious, and I love it! The pink rose bag really gives it that extra punch. This would be perfect for the girl who just aced her finals and is enjoying one last sunny afternoon downtown in her college city before heading home for the Summer. After a tough semester, this cute pastel outfit is just the right thing to lift her spirits in celebration.

Be sure to check out some other super cute options ModCloth now has available in plus-sizes as well. Their plus-size line is really expanding and I have to say I'm stoked about it! Here are a few that I'm eyeballing.

ModCloth Quirky Mid-length Tank top (2 thick straps) A-line Good Enough to Eat Dress

ModCloth Mid-length 3 A-line Literary Luncheon Dress

ModCloth Mid-length Sleeveless A-line All Eyes on Unique Dress

If you're not familiar with ModCloth, you can find all their dresses HERE and their plus-size dresses are HERE!

Nerd It Up: Penny Dreadful

Hello lovelies! Welcome to Nerd It Up! This is a feature on the blog where I put together plus-size looks inspired by nerd culture. This week the inspiration comes from the brand new tv show, Penny Dreadful. If you haven't seen it yet, you should definitely tune in! It's a dark, creepy, supernatural, Gothic adventure. Starring Eva Green and Josh Hartnett, no less! I was blown away by how eerie and intriguing it is.
